We celebrate along with the local population the vigil feast of Gubbio's patron saint, Ubaldo, the Corsa dei Ceri. It is a nine hundred year old ceremony which is certainly mind-boggling. Wooden ceri or "candles" four meters high are raced through the town. The origins of this feast is a pagan fertility rite, judging from the phallic ceri that is raised vertically in the town square to roar of the people.
